Meter testing

Western Power has a regulatory obligation to ensure that electricity meters connected to its network are operating correctly within their prescribed limits of accuracy.

To meet this obligation Western Power is undertaking a program to carry out testing on a large number of in-service electricity meters. The testing of the meters will be carried out at the customer’s premises.

Western Power has more than one million meters on the network. It is not feasible to carry out testing on all these meters, therefore, a randomly selected sample will be identified for testing.

Meters that make up the sample will be tested to determine if they are operating within their accuracy limits. Using statistical analysis of all these results it is possible to determine if a population of meters is operating correctly.

Carrying out this testing will require interruption of electricity supply for about one hour (this is not the case with transformer connected customers).

Notification

Western Power recognises that short power interruptions may cause personal difficulties for some customers.

To minimise these difficulties, customers that reside at sites where the electricity meter is to be tested will be notified in writing that their meter has been selected for testing and provided with a timeframe of when testing will be carried out.

The letter will provide contact details for the project management group, who can answer any questions that customers may have.
